EPIC – NASA Explorer
Last updated: May 12, 2026
Simple Summary: EPIC does not use analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking SDKs. The app stores favorites, download history, and cached APOD data using Apple's system frameworks, and that data may sync through your private iCloud account when CloudKit is available.
EPIC is a universal app for browsing NASA imagery and video. It can show the Astronomy Picture of the Day, NASA archive search results, Mars rover imagery, Earth imagery from NASA's EPIC service, and NASA TV streams. This policy explains what data the app uses, where that data is stored, and what network services are involved.
We do not collect personal information for analytics, advertising, or tracking. Specifically, EPIC does not use:
EPIC requests publicly available content from NASA services over HTTPS, including the Astronomy Picture of the Day API, NASA's image and video archive, Earth imagery endpoints, and NASA video streams. When the app contacts NASA, those requests go directly from your device to NASA or NASA's content delivery providers. As with any internet request, those services may receive standard network information such as your IP address according to their own policies.
To keep NASA TV channels current, EPIC fetches a small configuration file from our website. That request contains no account information, no advertising identifiers, and no app-specific personal profile data. The configuration is cached locally on your device using Apple's standard preferences system.
EPIC stores app data using Apple's SwiftData framework. Depending on your device and iCloud availability, this data may remain local to the device or may sync through your private iCloud database using CloudKit.
This stored data can include:
Private CloudKit data is associated with your Apple Account and is not shared publicly. We do not use it for profiling or advertising, and we cannot browse it like a public analytics database.
When you save media from EPIC, the file is written to a location you choose using Apple's system file interfaces. On Mac, EPIC opens a save panel that defaults to your Downloads folder. On iPhone and iPad, the system file exporter lets you choose where the file is stored. Downloaded files remain under your control.
EPIC offers a 7-day trial and an optional Lifetime Unlock. Purchases, receipts, and restore operations are processed by Apple's App Store and StoreKit. We do not receive your full payment card details.
EPIC does not use analytics services, advertising networks, or third-party tracking technologies. The app's privacy manifest declares that tracking is disabled.
You do not need to create an EPIC account, provide a password, or sign in to a developer-managed service to browse content in the app.
Network requests used by EPIC are made over HTTPS. Any synced private app data relies on Apple's iCloud and CloudKit infrastructure associated with your Apple Account.
EPIC does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the app does not use advertising, analytics, or developer-run accounts, it is designed to minimize data collection for all users.
